I had just gotten off an airplane after 14 hours. The light was bright, the air coming through an open runway door, had the heavy humid smell of strange blooming trees. The place outside the airport windows looked foreign, the people around me though, were the same as those that had traveled these many hours with me. I wanted them to be replaced instantly by new ones, to match this different place I was landing in. Perhaps I wanted to be different too. |

I am in love with an older man but he is unavailable because he lives with another woman. I see him once every 2 weeks and we talk about my art and we make love and eat sushi. When I am not around him sometimes I feel sad about my situation but when I see him or talk to him on the phone it’s a thrill and I’m so happy just to have his focus. |

Once I was taking the TGV from Marseille to Paris with my friend; we’re both American. I had a cold and drank a lot of cough syrup that I bought at the pharmacy at Gare St. Charles. The pharmacist was very cute; I flirted with him from behind my tissue. We got on the train and there were some empty seats facing each other with a little table in between. We like to play cards so we sat in these seats and ate pistachios. I destroyed my thumbnails opening them. Then when the train started moving an older man got up from his seat next to his friend and sat in the seat right next to me. My friend has beautiful bright colored tattoos all over her body, her white white skin. It was too hot to wear a sweater. The man wouldn’t stop staring at us. His eyes went back and forth from my breasts to her arms. Big ugly bloodshot bug eyes. I ignored him at first, but my friend was right across from him. She put her sunglasses on so that he couldn’t see her eyes. Finally she mouthed "fuck off" to him. When his face was inches away from my tits and he was making kissy faces at her, that was it. We got up and moved to some other shitty seats. Side by side, riding backwards. But now we both had to face him even from a few rows away. I gave him the evil eye right back. He called his friend over to join him. "See how much better these seats are? Now we can have the table." He was smiling and laughing. And he wouldn’t stop staring right in my face. I was so mad that I started salivating. My face was hot. The two of them pointed at us and laughed, saying stupid shit. They obviously didn’t think that we could understand. "Elle est belle, n’est pas?" I stood up and screamed at them. I couldn’t stop myself, but it made them shut up. The whole train car went quiet. Eventually he fell asleep, but I was pissed off the whole ride. When we finally arrived in Paris and got up to exit the train, the men were standing right in front of me, waiting to get off. They were both about a foot shorter than me. I could’ve easily kicked their asses. It made me laugh. |

I am visiting New York to see my son and his wife. I flew from Dublin for two days and will return to work after weekend. It is spring – the new fresh leaves are on the trees… both here in NY and also in Wicklow, a country area where my home is. |
